For the penultimate BNI meeting of the year, sixteen referrals were passed around the Chapter on Wednesday. Elizabeth Hicks of Irwin Mitchell Solicitors has decreed that no Visitors be invited for the last session of the year, so that, as a group, we may cast our thoughts towards even greater success next year.
We welcome our two new members to the Chapter and wish them that the road rises up before them.
Barry Neil of Ambient Computer Services (Tagline: We're the AA of the Computer World) used his ten minute Pitch to promote the environmental side of his business, pointing out that many Companies could substantially reduce their energy consumption through the adoption of a few measures, without affecting their competitiveness. I for one know that there is a building near St Albans Station, where the escalator is merrily revolving all day long, at enormous cost, no doubt.
The impressive, manly frame of Malcolm Forbes was absent from the meeting, as Malcolm is in Scotland for the regional heats of the All-Scotland Caber Tossing Championships (ASCTC) in Pitlochry. We wish him the best of luck.
The previous evening, I had attended a Reception at King's College London, given by the Principal, to mark the fact that, after 180 years, the College will finally occupy a part of neighbouring Somerset House. The East Wing will be occupied by the Law Faculty, so expect to see students walking around with Teddy Bears in the near future, Brideshead Revisited-style.
Later on Wednesday, I attended another function, where Artemis Films Ltd showcased their slate of film projects. "The Tempest" has already been filmed in Hawaii with Dame Helen Mirren and Russell Brand. Apparently, Mr. Brand filmed this after his little misunderstanding with Andrew Sachs, so one should consider how noble Mr. Brand's resignation from the BBC was, if he already had a gig with Helen lined up. The Trailer for the Project we all saw did not have very good sound, so it is a pity that Mads Nybo Jorgensen of Mac Million Ltd was not in charge of post-production, as he would have cleaned up the soundtrack.
The second project was Ralph Fiennes pitching for funding for "Coriolanus" to be filmed in Serbia. Is life just one big Pitch? I had the privilege of talking to him alone for five minutes or so, where I talked about his past projects, like "Schindler's List" with Steven Spielberg directing and another great film of his, "In Bruges".
Last night, most of the Chapter were able to attend the Razzle Dazzle Ball in Chelsea Hospital Gardens for our end-of-year bash. Good food, great conversation, lots of wine, Helen Wakeman-Jones.... who could ask for anything more?
There was no need to ask people whether they enjoyed themselves, as the Conga, led by Elizabeth, is probably still in full flow at the time of reading. Just remember to turn up for our final session of 2009 on Wednesday!
Vivat, Crescat, Floreat!

Wrote: Seems like I missed the event of the year. Not even caber tossing can compensate. (I did actually toss a caber once - when I was 25 - came 16 out of 18 contestants managing a creditable beginners full toss at 9 o'clock (the position of the caber when it comes to rest - should be 12 o'clock of course. Given up being a tosser since then. Thats it for the tossing jokes!
